How Can You Be A Top Performer In The Solar Industry?

What’s up guys? Sam Taggart here, and I’m just getting ready for the day. Right? So, it’s like, what solar reps do when it’s like beginning of the day, how does their morning look? When they’re going out to an area, what do they do when they get to that area and how do they manage their prospects? How do they train things like that? So, to become a top solar producer, and I’ve interviewed hundreds of awesome solar people all over the country, I’ve knocked in 17 states, I’ve sold different solar deals and consulted probably over a hundred solar companies. It’s interesting talking to different reps and saying like, what does the day look like, how do you prepare? So, what are the ways to be a top solar performer? I’m going to dive in. What Do You Do Off The Field?

Okay. So before you even hit the doors, it’s what you do off the field. It is not what you do on the field that makes you an athlete. It’s not like you practice on the doors. A great solar rep is going to spend more time off the field, preparing, learning, studying, and practicing plays. So, go in the field and start to work with actual customers. They’re not practicing on their customers. They’re actually delivering a really good pitch in presentation and close. So, we put thousands of videos together in D2D to where we put a whole solar training platform together. What’s cool about our companies is that we have the data of over 5,000 solar reps, and then we go and do surveys and say, okay, where are the top performers? How much time do they spend in the platform? I consistently see top reps spending more and more time in the training platform than the bottom reps.

And so you’re like, okay, if this is a common denominator, meaning there’s time spent in the platform and learning off the doors equals top performer. My question is, are you doing the same thing? But, the reality is, is whatever you’re doing in the morning, whether it’s reading a book, taking notes, listening to a podcast, spending time here, it should be something to help you be a top solar performer. You gotta go learn from top solar closers. You gotta go learn top solar lingo and the strategies. If you’re just reading some like cool book, that’s like, oh, this is working together. Great. It makes me feel good but, it doesn’t make me a better solar rep. Learn the best stuff from solar specific content to make you a better solar closer and be really potent with what you’re spending your time, money, and energy on to be that top solar rep.

What Mental Nutrition Are You Feeding Yourself?

All right, driving out the area is super important. It’s how do you change your state of mind? Because solar reps are thinking two things. They’re thinking, oh, what if I don’t sell today? What if I get a bagel? Well, yesterday I didn’t have any deals or I don’t have any appointments on the calendar. So, maybe I’ll scope a new area. A lot of times you’re psyching yourself out. So, what I like to do is I put on some real good music, fire me up, or a really good book. That’s gonna feed me full of like mental nutrition. I have found that the drive out to a new area has a lot to do with how you’re gonna tee up your day. Because, if you’re ending up sitting in your car a lot longer than you should, that means that you didn’t do anything intentional with your state of mind. Meaning the hardest door is the car door. We’ve all heard that. I watch even myself drive out to area and then procrastinate. It’s like, oh, let’s stop at the gas station and get drink. Or, oh, let’s scope out more neighborhoods longer or, let’s go do whatever. All you’re doing is procrastinating, avoiding the inevitable. You’re gonna get rejected. The sooner that you can put things into perspective and say, I’m gonna get rejected, that’s part of the job, nobody’s gonna kill me. If I don’t start talking to people, I’m not going to make money. Get out in the air. My number one tip is when you get to a neighborhood, you park the car and you run to the first door, don’t drag it out. Don’t procrastinate the doors and make sure that you’re changing your state of mind and firing yourself up through affirmations and good music as you’re going out the area.So, like I said, when you first get to a neighborhood, it is like, let’s go, you know, you know what I’m saying?

Knock The Doors That Already Have Solar

What’s crazy about getting into neighborhoods is, I wanna knock the homes that have solar first. When I scope out a neighborhood, it’s like, okay, where do I start? You know, these guys have a Vivint sign. So, they bought from a door-to-door company, right? Those are good signs. Do they have a door-to-door sign or roofing sign, an alarm sign? Do they already have solar? And you’re like, why would I knock the ones that already have solar? All I’m trying to do is get a lay of the lands. I’m going to go to these guys and I’m gonna be like, okay, you guys got solar. How long ago? Was it from a door to door guy? Has there been a lot of door to door? People come through here, I’m learning about this neighborhood. So, I’m like, all right, thank you. Then I’m gonna ask them, okay, who are these neighbors? What are their names? What are the names of those neighbors? I’m kind of getting instant referrals, so that when I go to this neighbor across the street, I can say, Hey, do you know Tiffany across the street? About a year ago, they got solar. Did they already tell you about it? And the savings and the bill that they now get is only five bucks, instead of it was 200 bucks, they’ve probably told you about it, right? Cause, I just got done talking to Tiffany and she said, you’re Tim, right? And so, I would start my new neighborhood with some momentum. If I start a neighborhood and it’s like, I just go in blind, with no strategy to it, I’ll probably burn through 20 doors and no success. Then just be like, I am going to get some momentum and be strategic.

Be Strategic

So, that’s the next tip. The last thing you gotta do is it, every night, at the end of the day, you want to recap your day. What are three things that you did well? What is one thing you can improve on? Often we don’t really assess where we’re actually intentionally going to become a top performer. If I’m thinking like, okay, my goal is to be a professional solar rep, then I’m going to do all the things required to be a professional. If I look at athletes, it’s very similar. They’re gonna do pre-game film, post-game film. They’re going to study. They’re going to look at their statistics. They’re gonna say, okay, I knocked 45 doors, and I talked to 22 people today.

One of the things in our DVD planner that we do, is we have goals. If you’re like, okay, doors knock. I said, I was gonna do 22. And I only did 20 or 21. Okay, cool. I was close to my goal, but I said I was gonna get four sets and I only got one set. So, you’re like, okay, I was one for 22. Is that the areas that my pitch was? Was I energetically not there? You really want to analyze what you are doing to be the top performer. How am I keeping score? Am I just kidding myself? Where so many people at the end of the day, are like, I worked so hard today. But, I’m like, well, how many people did you really talk to? And they’re like, uh, like three. It is like, oh, so do you worked really hard today? You talked to three total people like most people, if you told them, you’re gonna make six figures and talk to three people a day, they would laugh at you. I’m gonna laugh at you. So, really be honest and objective, not subjective. Meaning, you worked hard versus no, I didn’t actually work that hard. The numbers say that you worked hard, or not.

Recap Your Day

So, recap your day. Say, Hey, I used this close or this close went well, this close didn’t. I said these things, I applied this stuff from the training videos and, and I promise you’re going to be on your way to a top performer.
