Choosing Success in Door-to-Door Sales: Find Your Perfect Fit

What’s up, everyone? 

Are you searching for a new sales home, feeling stuck in a dead-end job, or simply looking to enter the door-to-door industry?

Most people think that the sales income averages 50 to 70 grand. 

For the first year, it probably does. 

I’ve trained over 20,000 students over the last five years and seen firsthand how individuals can go from making an average income to earning millions knocking on doors.

That’s right—reps are out there making seven figures and more!

Before we dive into the details, let me tell you about my journey. 

I’ve been in the door-to-door sales industry since I was just 11 years old, selling curbside address paintings. It’s funny because over Christmas break, my three girls and I set up a hot chocolate stand, and in just two hours, we sold nearly a hundred cups! 

The fundamental sales process remains the same: you bring a valuable product to a customer, transact, and get paid. It’s the highest-paying position in any business because you bring in the revenue.

So, let’s address the burning question on your mind: How do you make serious money in door-to-door sales?

It all comes down to finding the right company, developing your skills, and harboring a winning mindset.

Here are some essential best practices on how to vet a company:

Finding the Right Company

First and foremost, here are a few things to look out for when finding the right company to look for: 

1. Track Record of Winners

Look for a company with a proven track record of success. If their top reps are only making $70,000 a year, it might be a sign to explore other options.

2. Leadership and Mentorship

Seek out companies that have proper training and onboarding systems in place.

Additionally, a strong company culture, leadership retreats, and virtual training play a huge role in your development as a sales professional. These determine how they will contribute to your success and are all signs of a good company. 

Most companies rely on the D2DU, our training platform, which is the best in class for door-to-door professionals. But, if their contribution looks like, “Just shadow me for a day,” it might not be a good fit. 

3. Market Differentiation

You want to be part of a company that stands out.

Otherwise, you risk wondering, “How do I differentiate myself when I go to sell, and a thousand other solar companies are selling in the same market.?” 

Shy away from companies that solely focus on undercutting prices, as it can impact your commission and the overall quality of the product or service.

4. Customer Reviews

Remember, online reviews play a significant role in customers’ buying decisions. If a company doesn’t proactively prioritize getting good ratings and positive reviews, it’s a red flag.

Here is why:

When people look up the company online and see bad reviews, closing them can become an uphill battle for you. 

5. Cultural Fit

Don’t underestimate the importance of finding a company that aligns with your values and provides a supportive environment. You don’t want to feel like a fish out of water or surround yourself with people who don’t uplift and inspire you. 

Look for a positive, motivated, and growth-oriented culture. 

And, if you find that a company is anything but that, my advice is: Run and let me put you in a place like that because I think there’s one too many. 

Don’t Underestimate Personal Development

Getting good at your craft of selling requires continuous personal development. Attend sales training programs, read books on sales and personal growth, and surround yourself with successful people who can inspire and motivate you.

I’ve seen high school juniors make $250,000 in just four months and seen old guys find financial freedom in their golden years after figuring out that they don’t have a retirement plan. 

It’s all about finding the right fit – A company that supports your goals.
