Do Not Bribe
One of the biggest playing points is how do I take my reps from bad to great? And we lack these “top performers” and our mindsets are, oh, maybe if we just give these sign-on bonuses to these, like, badies, they’ll come and work for me. Well, guess what? That’s like a lazy way to grow. I’ll be honest. It’s just like, if you’re selling a product and you’re like, Hey, I’ll pay for your first five months. Uh, just get it. It’s like, well, anyone can do that. That’s just like bribing and it never creates sustainability. It’s really kind of a poor way to lead. So, I’m gonna share a little nugget on, how do you create top performers within your own company and with the current people you have.
Have Patience
The simple nugget is patience. Something we majorly lack in this society, patience. We have this thing that’s called the microwave mentality. We think we can just plug it in, zap it, and boom, we got Insta results. Well, I hate to break it to you, but it takes time to create massive top producing reps. So, when you find the right talent be patient. It will come. You cannot find the wrong people and train them into hard work. You have to find the right people and train them smart and let them do the hard work that they actually want to do.
Jim Harbaugh did a training that was really impactful. So he used to be the coach at Stanford and he took Stanford from the losing program to a very successful football program. And one of the impactful lessons that I learned from him is he was like, dude, I couldn’t go recruit this top talent. People like a lot of these Alabamas and stuff like that are recruiting. I, you know, they wouldn’t qualify. They didn’t have the grades to get into Stanford. So he is like, I took approach that was more of, I’ll go to a sophomore in high school and I’ll recruit a sophomore on getting good grades so that then he could come to Stanford. He was patient enough to say, my next two years are probably gonna suffer, but if I can take the sophomore class into a junior class and a senior class to actually qualify with their grades to get into Stanford, I will then have an amazing football program. It took him a couple years, but then a few years later when he had the right talent that he then put his time, energy, and effort into, he was in a thriving football program. So that’s one simple example. It correlates really well to leadership in our industry. A lot of times we just want the instant results. We think that these reps will come to us and boom we will have an incredibly successful team.
Spend More Time And Training In Your Current Reps
We just automatically think, oh, we gotta go get that guy, cause he is really good at that company. Well, the reality is that if we have patience and invest more money and time into our own people. Like, bringing them to D2DCON, or subscribing to different channels, and picking up books. It is all the training stuff like that where you will see individuals grow and succeed. Teaching your reps really good, impactful principles, and like true mentorship, true coaching, and true leadership. These reps of yours will grow loyal. They will be faithful. They will do anything for you. You will be able to create an amazing culture around top performing reps. This is a short little nugget, but like I said at D2DCon, you’re going to find massive nuggets from some of the best people that have created some awesome talent in this industry.
