Sam Taggart 00:39
is Sam Taggart with the D2D podcast and I’m here with Deshaun Bryant here in Houston. Well, what are we doing today,

Deshaun Bryant 00:45
Houston, Texas, man at roof con overhead at 100 and Jeremy put together for the roofing industry, man. So it’s a honor and privilege to be able to meet you first of all, and then it’s even more of a privilege to be on the podcast, believe it or not when I was um, I was in Tennessee and I met some guys that came to your door to door summit. And there’s like him to attack him. I was like next time I see Sam and I’m gonna be on his podcast. That’s all I tell you.

Sam Taggart 01:08
Hey, I’m the one that asked he wasn’t even like, Hey, can I be on your podcast? It’s like, dude, let’s do this. And anyway, so he is roof hustler. A lot of you guys should follow him on Instagram and Facebook. He’s got a lot of good stuff on YouTube. And I really like your concept of kind of like what I want to jam on. But before we dive into that, we’re gonna go into your story, a little bit of your backstory, but the main focus of today’s podcast is going to be follow principles, not your feelings. When it comes to door to door, you know, he was telling me He’s like, I’m a principles guy. And I think that too many people, they dictate what they do everyday based on how they feel that it is. It’s crazy. So before we dive into that, a couple things aside for door to door con 2020. Yes, sir, are 2021 for

Deshaun Bryant 01:51
D2DCon2021 happy to have you heard about the first three, I will be at the fourth with no doubt in my mind already. I’m the…

Sam Taggart 01:58
Interior hustler. And you are somebody that’s like, I take pride in knocking, which this is one of the few out there that I’m like, he is owning it, teaching it traveling about it. And of course, it’s got to be there. That’s like that’s the

Deshaun Bryant 02:09
place to be. So we’ll be that issue, man and what I’m involved in, I just want to be there to be a part of the community and continue to raise the standard of the dodo community. Love it. Love it. So

Sam Taggart 02:19
So how did you get started in door to door I don’t know your story. I

Deshaun Bryant 02:22
believe that not many have found me by mistake. So um, I got a real good friend of mine was at the bar just chillin vibe. And he’s like, man, I got a job. I think it’d be great. And I was like, Alright, they take me in the field the next day turns out his daughter though. And the thing that really even got me in the roof hustles and building my brand is most Roofing Companies most door to door companies, man, they take you out two days and they say you got it. And that’s exactly what they do me took me out two days. They said you got it.

Sam Taggart 02:48
I got one day. So

Deshaun Bryant 02:50
you got one more day, two days. And then after that they sent me on my own. I closed four deals. My first week I got paid $200 a contract. So I made 800 bucks. My first week I used to work at Sam’s Club. They just take me two weeks to make 600 bucks. So when I made 800 bucks my first week, I was like something don’t add up. I put in 25 hours here and I made 800 bucks I put in 40 hours and I make 600 bucks. And when I got started me and my fiance we had a baby on the way and the thing that she said to me say you got a month to make some money. We need to find a real job. So to me it was a challenge. I was on a mission man and I’ve been knocking on doors it’d be six years nine February. That’s awesome. Congratulations.

Sam Taggart 03:26
So when your fiance says hey, you need to make some money or you got to find a real job yeah, now what’s your perception of door to door as a real job or kind of still like a like what’s your what’s your two cents on this?

Deshaun Bryant 03:38
Oh man I believe if you in anything that don’t pay for your results, you tripping like anything that don’t pay you for the results that you give him versus the time that you put in you got to really really realize see what your values are because I love you and paid off my results because I’ve been going there for two hours and put up amazing results versus you have me on your clock for eight hours and you pay me for my time and then you pay me based off what you think on value not based off what I know what I’m valued at. So I tell anybody man if you’re in any type of sales or not if you’re doing any regular job nine to five anything and you are betting on yourself, I highly recommend getting in some type of door to door industry some type of sales because when you can see what you can get paid off for your results and it changed your whole perspective. I can’t go back to a nine to five I

Sam Taggart 04:23
can’t do it. It would be very hard and I’m assuming a lot of people listening are probably the same way and no disrespect.

Deshaun Bryant 04:27
I do 9-5, but if you’re that guy that’s like I’m tired it is man is some bs go bet on yourself and get paid off your results. Love that.

Sam Taggart 04:37
So how did you get into this whole roof hustlers brand like what like what inspired you to kind of go out and train and um

Deshaun Bryant 04:45
Believe it or not man I met a homeowner two years ago and not though as I told him, he was like, Man, you good? Not many people can get me to know who you look up to him like nobody does God given talent all praise no man. He said well check out Grant Cardone. I’m like, all right. Being so I look up uncle g went from 30 minutes three hours my girl thought I was crazy coming to house my head picking a head up and one thing Grant cardones say that stood out to me said you got to find the gaps. But I just sat down and thought I’m like, Man, it’s a gap in my industry. Nobody properly trained on this. Nobody properly trained him. I’m gonna be the guy I’m gonna give away for you to I’m gonna get you to give away the game for free and my goal is to make sure any guy to get into this industry after me Never struggled like

Sam Taggart 05:26
Yeah, because that’s a very similar reason as I was just like man there’s a lot of general sales training but a door to door a cold call face to face like that is its own its own training and it needs its

Deshaun Bryant 05:40
own its own mindset, its own perspective. Like it’s not like any other type of sales that will you go out here we hunt, man, like you deal with the general public. You deal with people that don’t want what you got to offer. Yeah, you walk away with a signature. Yeah, that’s a different type of salesman. No, I

Sam Taggart 05:58
agree. You know, so now that you’ve trained obviously, you said train on principles, yes on feeling and it’s not about you know, what should I do today based on how I feel so like walk me through some of your key principles that you believe any door to door salesperson should have.

Deshaun Bryant 06:14
Um, so I’m gonna give you background story on that so I actually got my own 11 door to door roof commandments, okay, I got 11 door to door No, I did one more because I don’t want to play with God. Like I got 10 I’m gonna do 11 and I got it from Eric Thomas. And he said at the hip hop preacher he said everybody take what they need core beliefs and values that they operate with and I sat down I’m like, Man, what are mine so I sat down in mastermind and I came up with 11 door to door roof commandments like one of my principles is we always knock over ringing the doorbell I don’t believe in ringing doorbells I believe in knocking and I do that don’t turn it into that like that’s my principal knocking I’ve had a lady come to the door one time open the door walk away. He says I owe my son not like that. And you know so it’s a game change I do always leave some information. You know that famous saying if a tree falls in the forest, and nobody did here do it make sense? If you had a neighborhood and don’t leave information was why you know likewise you that you know another one is out of context out of order but five knows before you leave the dope most guys do three knows. I say you go five go to get them uncomfortable. Get them to

Sam Taggart 07:20
where they’re kind of like do I shut

07:22
off or let’s get to that awkward moment therefore, Hey, man, therefore Yes, I’m one of my favorite ones is man we get to know people we don’t attack people. Yeah, I believe every door you go to you should learn one or two new things about your homeowner that you didn’t know before you went. Most guys so focused on throwing up on somebody because they selfishly thinking about themselves. I tell them stop thinking about you serve your homeowners serve your client. And the money is a byproduct. I love that you know so that’s another one um, was a couple was I got the list on me man. Sometimes they get they

Sam Taggart 07:54
They just love this. This is good. So I found a lot of times if people as door to door they don’t. They don’t ever put these beliefs around anything. Like they just kind of like oh, whatever I have a job. I’m gonna go do my job. I’m gonna learn my pitch. And I’m like, it’s more than a pitch guys. Like it’s it’s who you are as its attorney. It’s like who you are and what you stand for and your value system. Everyday you tie your shoes and go out in the field. It’s kind of like what’s what’s driving you and what do you stand by as you operate? Wear that badge of honor You know? So

Deshaun Bryant 08:28
keep going. I’m big on the why. Like, that’s not a principle but I tell guys when I go train man, find out why you’re doing this because you do it for money. It ain’t big enough. Yeah, I tell everybody never do your job for your boss. Never do your boss never do your job for external validation. Never do so your boss gonna say Good job, man. Good job. do for you. Like do it for you. Because your boss you don’t love your boss enough to go out and their balls to the walls. six days a weekend hit the doors. But you love yourself and you love your family that much you love you. One thing I do. I put my kids on my dashboard. So anytime I pull into a neighborhood and I don’t want to get out they’re looking at me. So I got to get out and not you know, take

Sam Taggart 09:07
it that’s a good technique.

Deshaun Bryant 09:09
Yeah, I do that all the time. And what love another principle I use, we aim to be first and be the best. In the roofing industry. At the fresh storm. You always want to be the first in the neighborhood. And I also I try to be in first in the neighborhood at the first time. If you can catch a neighborhood Are you the first one in as a game changer. And then we aim to be the best if you can’t be first you want to be the best you just want to out pro out of the guys. You want to have the best pitch, best looking best mindset best company. That’s information. And then I always like to take it a step further for my daughter though, guys, maybe the best with your paperwork. It don’t matter how many deals you can close if you suck with your paperwork. You know what I mean? With your paperwork because these guys close deals and turn deals. They’re two three days late, and they wonder why they money messed up and it’s like man be the best with your paperwork. So that’s another principle Um, so I got 11 of them but what a

Sam Taggart 09:58
what a win you become a pro. What’s your like, go into that a little bit more. Um,

Deshaun Bryant 10:04
so it’s a great book called The War of war on art. And I love the book in the day that really changed my perspective about is a guy named Paul shikhar.

Sam Taggart 10:14
Have you ever heard the alarm?

Deshaun Bryant 10:16
I was watching this video One day, he said, My goal is to be He’s like, I’m a professional door to door salesman. And he’s like, I made $300,000 in one year, and I was like, I’m gonna go pro. I didn’t know what that meant. But I was like, I’m gonna be a professional door to door salesman. And as I’ve been studying, investing more energy into it the den between the pro and the amateur, the amateur does it through a hierarchy. What do I mean by that is like, he focused on doing better than the next guy if he doing you know if he doing less than a guy that messes with his self esteem. You know, he doing it for the validation, he doing it for the recognition versus the Pro, you don’t got a hierarchy mindset, you got a territorial mindset, which is he go into the field because it does something for him. Like, in the field, that’s my utopia. Like, I’m, I’m stress free, like, I get in my zone. And it don’t matter what anybody else say what anybody else do, because I don’t do it for the external. The Pro do it because he loved it. Pro do it. Because even if he did get paid to not do it, and still go out there, because the thrill, just get more excited in the chip. So I tell guys, you got to go from amateur to pro amateurs do this for the money. And this is a quote from the book. So I don’t want to take no credit for it. He say, when you are Pro, you do it because you love it. And when you do if anything that you don’t love it is prostitution. Like, you know, you pimping yourself out for a check, which if they didn’t pay you, you wouldn’t do it no matter what I get paid. And I go do it because I’m full commission anyway, so they don’t pay me. Yeah. Oh, good. You know, I love the dip between going amateur and Pro.

Sam Taggart 11:53
So let’s kind of dive into let’s say that I am a rep. I’m trying to go pro, but I get my face kicked in over and over and over again. I’m getting kind of discouraged. What What advice do you give reps that kind of get into the slump? That they feel like, man, how do I how do I get out of the slump, um,

Deshaun Bryant 12:09
I don’t believe that such thing as a slow. I don’t believe in such thing as a slow. I just want to say that to the cameras on me. There’s no such thing as a slow man. The only thing that puts you in a slump is you forget why you’re doing this. You forget why you started this. And if you started for a paycheck, that’s why you want to slow you’re getting paid. So he’s like, oh, man, this don’t work. Oh, man, I need to find. But if you did this, because my goal is to take care of my family. My goal is to get like you take him bigger than yourself, you know, get no stop, because you’re gonna go out there and make it work until things happen. And also let guys know, man, you can never control the outcome. All you can do is control your action and your effort. And the thing about the field is a beautiful thing. It will always give you back what you put in. And it might not come back when you want it. But it’s coming. And most guys don’t stay around long enough in this industry to see the fruits of their labors. farmers don’t get an apple tree today they plant the tree. It takes time takes three years to grow pineapple do it I mean, if you know anything by the bamboo tree, I think it’s the first five years ago like a couple centimeters and then the next foliage is proud to 90 feet start to grind through man and a lot of guys get so caught up on that instant gratification because I got a big employee mindset. But 40 hours this week, I get paid on Friday. This industry don’t work like that, man, you got to have that delayed gratification. So anybody that’s struggling, I would say man just tend to crop tend to your harvest. Just get out there and keep knocking get out there and keep putting in work. And the universe will take care of everything and guess because what you put into the field, he will give you back a promise.

Sam Taggart 13:37
I love that. No, I had a first year rep hit me up the other day. And he was like, I don’t know if I’m going to do this yet. Like yet another year. Right? So he’s like, one summer. I think that was enough. I didn’t make the money I wanted to make like he made like 13,000 bucks. I was like, Okay, great. You made 13 grand. But I was like, but what you’re not counting for is you’re done with your first year high five, like, you’re never gonna have a year like, like, you got through the hard stuff like now you quit. And it’s kind of like this second year is much better. And the third year is much better. But I’m like, if you don’t give it a second year, you like you didn’t appreciate the firt like you didn’t you still have to own the fact that you did your first year you you suffered through freshman year like like hardship like you get to be a sophomore and pick on the freshmen now like like Dude, don’t give up now. And he was like, Oh, that makes sense. You did like but but when you’re in that and you’re in the newbie stage it’s kind of like you don’t see it that way you

Deshaun Bryant 14:37
Don’t you’re in it in the thing that killed me about guys like in a tie industry is they’ll sit at a nine to five for years bro and never complain about the increase today and combo I didn’t ever got a promotion but again, they don’t make money immediately. And it’s like odious don’t work this site. No your job don’t work, but you never complain about that for four years, five years is now such as waste so heavy You, you get you, thank you, you get you get your anxiety hat. You know, I was excited when I got to bed on me, man, because I feel like you bet on me. I’m gonna win every time.

Sam Taggart 15:10
I love that. So, so I’m coaching a guy this last weekend kindra recruiting some Yep. And I was gonna charge him a lot to do this big consulting coaching program, NASA question I want you guys to pay attention, same question and said, Would you give me $60,000? I said, What do you want to make? He’s like, 600,000 bucks this next year? It’s a lot of money, right? A lot of money. So he’s like, 600 grand. I said, Okay. Would you bet on yourself? It’s like, Well, of course, I said, Okay. Let’s put your money where your mouth is, you’re going to give me 60 grand, you’re going to put I’m going to put it in an escrow account. I won’t touch it. It’s there. It’s mine. If you don’t hit 600 grand, it’s yours. If you get 600 grand, would you give me the 600 grand now? Or would you give me the 60 grand now? What would know? And I go, well, then you’re not betting on yourself, not. And I said, if you were so certain, and you knew that was truly a goal and a blood goal, you put your money where your mouth was knowing that it’s like, Hey, I’m committed. Now you put your ass on the line, because I guarantee you kitten iscas needs lamb. I said, I guarantee you, when you go do 300 grand, you’re gonna get complacent, you’re going to find it’s great. And then you’re going to say, this isn’t as good. It’s a killer. And I’m like, 600 grand for a 23 year old cat is a lot of money, a lot of money. And I go, you don’t even know what that looks like. And you don’t even know what you would do with 600 grand. And so I said until you go and put your own ass on the line and bet on yourself. Because right now, we bet you not being able to just take this bet like I’m like, dude, I’m gonna coach you for the next 12 months. I was like, for free if you can bet on yourself. And I go right there is the lesson you need to learn. Think on that. And he goes, that was the I didn’t see what I was doing. But I go taht is your problem.

Deshaun Bryant 16:48
It is because you really don’t believe me? Yeah, believe it or not, you really don’t believe you say the goal. You say

Sam Taggart 16:55
You want it. But there’s no there’s nothing behind that punch dude.

Deshaun Bryant 17:00
I don’t know even this year, man, I set out a goal. I said my goal is to train six companies this year, and I hit six like four months I’m like, should say 20 to say like 30 companies and if I landed at 15 cool, but I think we ended the year like 10 in India 10 That’s awesome. Dude, it’s fun. It’s you’re in the new journey. Yeah, man. like they’ve been the same since since February.

Sam Taggart 17:24
Yeah. It makes me think back to my first year trying to coach and consult I mean, I’ve done over 120 something companies now that’s all it’s it’s it’s been it’s been a journey. So I anyway, I can help you and support you man. I think more people need better

Deshaun Bryant 17:40
I gotta get a university man. I got to get a university Rufus university I got to get that cookie because right now I do a full week training program. But it’s live because I looked at people like I love that touching but I got to get that we can help you put it together

Sam Taggart 17:55
get the film team and we got the platform and we got all i can i can help you definitely. So one last piece of advice if you had to give the door to door space any just one piece of advice what would it be

Deshaun Bryant 18:11
if I had to get a door to door one piece of advice man is I’m investing to you so that’s the best thing you could do in this industry is because I started in this industry two years wrong. Just wrong God given talent. And then year two and a half I started reading I read three to four books a month I attend three to four conferences a year I pay for coaching I pay for a person like I do all to invest in that I’d need to do to become a better version of myself because I believe if you spend more time working on you the job get easy Yeah, I think God spends so much time working on the job and they stay the same if you spend a lot of time working on you invested into you growing you this thing is it becomes second nature man like it it’s hard to not when as you become a better person a better version of yourself so bad until anybody thing one piece of advice new guys veteran guys all these guys always stay learning always adversity itself because the moment you think you arrive is the moment you start to climb.

Sam Taggart 19:12
A man you guys heard it firsthand so if you’re listening guys go follow him roof hustlers. This Shawn Bryant. And you know Instagram is

19:22

Deshaun Bryant 19:58
